Any Personal Characteristics or experiences that would cause you to possibly see things differently than the majority of people in the US?

I was raised by my mother and grandmother. My parents divorced when I was in elementary school, and we never saw my father again. My mother always had to work two jobs; one during the week and one on the weekend. My mother was always unable to come to most school activities, because she was always at work. It was really hard being raised with no father around.

Thinking back on your childhood and adolescence, can you remember a teacher teaching something that was particularly interesting and memorable to you? What was being taught? How was the teacher teaching it? Why do you think it was such an effective learning experience for you?

In 5th grade, our teacher decided we would present a book report in puppet show form. We took a field trip to a gourd farm and she bought a bunch of gourds for the class to use. (The gourds were the head of the puppets.) The class all made puppets and presented the various book reports. But after that was over, nobody wanted to take down the puppet stage. We left the stage (old refrigerator box) in the corner of the class all year! We made so many puppets. We used the puppets for all kinds of oral reports. I never laughed so much at school again. I will always remember this teacher. I remember seeing her smile, as she watched us busily working on our puppet productions.
