THAT WAS FUNJessica
BACKGROUND Thinking back on your childhood and adolescence, can you remember a teacher teaching something that was particularly interesting and memorable to you? What was being taught? How was the teacher teaching it? Why do you think it was such an effective learning experience for you? I was in the 6th grade. My teacher was a fun, energetic lady with a lot to offer her students. She believed in creating a very hands-on environment. We had a month-long project that she put together and that taught us in many subject areas. A group of student got together to form a country. The students named their country, drew a map of their country, described exports and made up all the necessities for being a country. We were being taught geography, math, language arts, social studies, and working together as a team. When the group was done forming our country, we would continue getting together a few times during the week. In our group we picked cards from the teacher than described situation for our country. If we were to "go to war" with another country, we had to make preparations, guide our group, and then conference after the battles. This group work was very effective in teaching me about the workings of a country, how to work with others, and many other important skills. When we finished the activity we gave our teacher our feedback and told her we would be willing to do this again! I thank all my teachers for my education and I know they influenced me to teach and touch children's lives just as they touched mine.
