Think about a time in your K-12 school experiences when you really had fun learning something. Hopefully, we all remember times in school when we learned a lot and had fun doing it. As you read the stories below, think about what made these learning experiences so enjoyable and memorable for these students. (Before you read the stories, you may want to scroll down to the Questions/Activities section to find out what you need to pay particular attention to in the stories.)

1. In their stories, Heidi, Stephanie, and Diane talked about movement and learning. Visit the Movement & Learning website.

1a. Why are actions such as swinging, rolling and jumping thought to be so valuable for young children?

1b. Use information from the studies of Kearney (1996), Clarke (1980), and Gilbert (1977) to convince another teacher (or principal) that physical movement is important to overall learning/performance.

1c. Describe 3 strategies you might use in your classroom to get students moving in a purposeful way.
