Any Personal Characteristics or experiences that would cause you to possibly see things differently than the majority of people in the US?

Being of a Chinese ancestry yet being born and raised in the US has often caused me to feel like I don't "belong" anywhere. Growing up in Delaware, I did not see too many Asian people and often felt like an outsider because of my physical differences. But when visiting my relatives in Singapore, I often felt that I did not belong there either because I could not speak Chinese very well..

Thinking back on your childhood and adolescence, can you remember a teacher teaching something that was particularly interesting and memorable to you? What was being taught? How was the teacher teaching it? Why do you think it was such an effective learning experience for you?

In my 8th grade science class we had a "Black Sludge Day". We had no other classes that day so that we could spend the entire day working on this one project with our partners. Each pair of students was given an unknown mixture, our "Black Sludge". we were supposed to separate and identify the mixture using any of the techniques we had been taught thus far. It was great to be able to see real applications for all the techniques we had learned and we all felt like "real scientists". It was also interesting because each pair of students got a different mixture so we were not all searching for the same "right answer". We would often consult each other when we were stuck and occasionally the teachers would give us some prompting questions to help lead us in the right direction. But they would never give us the answers or tell us what to do next-- we had to figure that out for ourselves!
