Any Personal Characteristics or experiences that would cause you to possibly see things differently than the majority of people in the US?

I was born and raised in Japan on the military base and did not move to the US until I was in the 8th grade. Moving to the US was a culture shock since I was raised with many of the Japanese customs. Since my mother does not speak English very well, I had the responsibility of translating for her at a very young age since my father was often out to sea.

Thinking back on your childhood and adolescence, can you remember a teacher teaching something that was particularly interesting and memorable to you? What was being taught? How was the teacher teaching it? Why do you think it was such an effective learning experience for you?

I particularly remember my 3rd grade teacher. She was a teacher who was full of enthusiasm and always made learning fun. she was very creative, and I remember her be very active. Whenever she taught us things that we had to memorize, she would make up songs for them. She would write her own lyrics that included student's names or silly sayings. This is how I learned my conjunctions, the fifty states, the capitols of the states, multiplication facts and may other things we were suppose to know. I always like this because it made it easier to remember, and it was fun to sing. Oftentimes, there were movements that went with the words which added to more fun. It was particularly funny when we were tested on these facts because you could hear an underlying buzz of singing going on -- everyone was singing to themselves!
