Any Personal Characteristics or experiences that would cause you to possibly see things differently than the majority of people in the US?
I had a wonderful childhood. Unlike a lot of children, I grew up with both parents in a safe environment located on a farm in the mountains surrounding San Diego. I never was awakened by the sounds of sirens or gunshots. I consider myself blessed.
Thinking back on your childhood and adolescence, can you remember a teacher teaching something that was particularly interesting and memorable to you? What was being taught? How was the teacher teaching it? Why do you think it was such an effective learning experience for you?
I went to a small private high school. Once a year we chose a country, event in American history, or a state to write a research paper on. Then we designed a booth that represented our subjects. We set up our booths on a special day. All the parents came and saw our booths. I was so proud to show off my booth, especially when the teachers came around to interview me about my theme. One year in particular I chose the Oregon Trail. My booth looked like a wagon and I brought in real wagon shells. I served beef jerky as my food because the travelers on the Oregon Trail dried their meat to preserve it. I will never forget the themes that I researched or the states and countries that I did. This fair brought history to life for me.
