NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE
Mario
BACKGROUND
Sex: male
Ethnicity: Mexican
Born in: Tecate, B.C.
Parents born in: Mexican
I probably see the world a bit differently because I was raised by a single Hispanic woman who couldn't speak
and still can't speak English. Because of this, I was very secluded from mainstream America. Because we
always lived in predominantly white neighborhood, we didn't make friends.
.....
The only times I would feel uncomfortable would be in the activities my mom was involved in because of the language barrier. A lot of the
times she just wouldn't show up. Like for example to "open house' or "teacher/parent conference' or even school plays. There seemed to
always be a lack of translators and that made my mom uncomfortable.
I suggest that teachers and schools be more conscious about this and not force the children to translate for them. Because I know that for me
it was really acquired to be put in this type of setting.
