Coming from a different background than many people, I was able to appreciate the many cultures that are included in our society. Just like I wanted my culture to be appreciated, I learned to appreciate and learn about others. These experiences gave me the opportunity to relate to people not only within my own culture, but from other cultures.


..... The times I felt left out, belittled, invisible and unwanted were when I had problems speaking a new language. I thought and still think that there are people who think that when a person doesn't SPEAK a language clearly, that person doesn't THINK clearly as well. Teacher might make you feel uncomfortable without even knowing it. Many times, teachers keep me out of class activities because I couldn't speak English. They thought keeping me out of those activities was the right decision but, in fact, it wasn't. Teachers just have to be aware that students are different and come from different backgrounds. They have to realize that and be more sensitive to students' needs.
