PREJUDICE-REDUCING EXPERIENCE

Both of my parents are natives of Southern California. My dad is a fourth generation California native. I've always lived here, too, so all my educational experiences have been in the California schooling system. I have always been in public schools and mostly in suburban areas. During my middle school years, the district I was in began bussing children in from downtown. My school go very desegregated between sixth and eighth grades. A lot of gangs came in and as a result the administration found themselves in turmoil. I remember being on student council and helping the administration make arrangements for after school activities and later bussing privileges. This was the time I began mingling with people from different backgrounds. I learned a lot at this time.

I remember in the 7th grade I was voted "The Student of the Week" by my English teacher. The principal called my name over the intercom so everyone in the school heard. I remember I could not believe my ears.

When the my name was called over the loudspeaker, I didn't know which teacher nominated me. It turned out that the one I expected the least had picked me. I remembered him being such a stern man and he never paid any special attention to me. I guess it goes to show that although one may not show it, a quiet teacher may cherish the student-teacher relationship you have with him/her.
