PREJUDICE-REDUCING EXPERIENCE
Ricardo

BACKGROUND
Sex: male
Ethnicity:
Chicano
Born in:
Chula Vista, CA
Parents born in:
U.S.A.

I was born into a Mexican-American family. I grew up in a somewhat middle class neighborhood and attended an Elementary school with few Latino students. I didn’t grow up speaking Spanish because my parents thought I would be more successful knowing good English.

As a kid I grew up not knowing much about myself, my culture, or my homeland (Mexico). I was always considered a Mexican to those who chose to label me, but for reason I didn’t feel comfortable being called a Mexican. Everything surrounding me reinforced that Mexicans were lazy, no good, and most of them illegal. As life went on I learned a lot about myself. I embraced my culture and I defeated all odds. I became an educated, successful, and respected Chicano.Prejudice- Destroying Story As a kid I remember teasing a boy. Everyone would call him a "gay lord" and I participated in this act because I was ignorant of his culture. He was Turkish and it was the norm for him to be affectionate with males. He would put his arm around the boys and he got the reputation that he was homosexual. I was not his friend and neither was anyone else because being gay was definitely not accepted in Elementary school. It was not until I went to his birthday party, that I realized he was just like all the other kids. He had feelings, he liked sports, and he was interested in cool stuff.
