Mexican-American
Born in:
Mexico
Parents born in:

As a child and teenager, I remember my father being racist against Afro-Americans. They were lazy, dirty, thieves, etc. according to him. In Elementary school I didn’t know or hang around with any Afro-Americans. However, in Junior high, I started hanging around with 1-2 black girls. I was still reluctant to share some items with them like my brush, clothes and food. When I started High school, I hung around with more Afro-Americans and became more open to sharing with them. I realized that my dad was stereotyping all Afro-Americans as a certain way. Today, I do not consider myself to be a prejudice against Afro-Americans, all races of people can be lazy, dirty, thieves, etc. not just one groups of people.

My Elementary teachers did not effect this prejudice. My High school teachers treated all students equally not matter what color skin they had. By modeling this respect and treatment, I too, began treating all people fairly.
