PREJUDICE-REDUCING EXPERIENCE

BACKGROUND
Sex: male
Ethnicity: Italian
Born in: Cleveland, OH
Parents born in: U.S.A.

A characteristic that would cause me to see things differently than the majority of people in the U.S. is the fact that I have a learning disability. It has made learning difficult for me at times, and I have consequently needed to work harder than most people in order to achieve the same educational goals.

When I was a junior in high school, I took an oceanography class. Our final project was to do a Kelp Ecology Lab. I really enjoyed doing this lab because it provided good hands on experience. We were able to go to many different beaches and collect different kelp samples. I felt that I learned much more by actually going out and collecting different species of kelp rather than just viewing pictures of them in a textbook.

The teacher helped to make learning fun by providing fun and exciting ways to learn. I looked forward to the assignment and have since retained much of the information I learned years ago.
