BACKGROUND
Sex: female
Ethnicity:
Pilipino-American
Born in:
Manila, Philippines
Parents born in:
Manila, Philippines

I was born in the Philippines and lived there until I was 18 months old. My parents have strong Pilipino ties, and continue to practice their culture. My siblings and I were taught and raised to practice many of the Pilipino customs and traditions. Many of these customs and traditions differ from the American customs and traditions.

I remember growing up in Point Loma. When I was in 3rd. grade, my teacher asked a question, as we were all gathered around her on the carpet. I raised my hand to answer. Another student near me asked me why m hand was a different color from his and everyone else's in our class. You see, he and everyone else in the class was either Portuguese or Spanish. I sat there, speechless, not knowing how to reply.

Fortunately, the teacher began explaining that it was because I was born in another country--the Philippines. She continued by discussing the things we had in common (two eyes, dark hair, one nose, two arms, two legs, etc). then, we talked about our differences. This incidence helped me, and I assume, helped the other students, understand the differences and similarities in our cultures and physical appearances. I remember this situation clearly because it was the first time I recall being involved with prejudice.
