PREJUDICE-REDUCING EXPERIENCE
Christie

BACKGROUND
Sex: female
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Born in: Long Beach, CA
Parents born in: USA

My childhood education was spent in schools where there were many bilingual classes. My mom was very much against bilingual education. She felt that it was not successful because too much Spanish was being used, which may have been the case at my school.

Growing up hearing her comments I guess I began to take on her prejudice. Later in life I began substitute teaching. I substituted in many upper grade classrooms. I became exposed to many upper grade students who didn't have a good grasp in English. I began to think that my mom was right and that students should be taught in English because maybe they were not getting enough instruction in English. Seven years later I began classes to get my CLAD certificate. It was then that I realized that bilingual education is necessary if the first language is used to support the learning of the second language and gradually reduced.
