PREJUDICE-REDUCING
EXPERIENCE BACKGROUND
I am dyslexic and have had difficulties in the past. I always compensated for my disability by working harder and by practicing reading and writing lessons outside of class. Because my dyslexia wasn't severe, I was able to attend regular classes and was always placed in advanced reading groups, though I still had difficulty with particular words and sometimes reversed numbers in math class. My high school had a very progressive arts program which included studio spaces for the advanced are students. After submitting a portfolio, I was selected for advanced art and was given my own studio space in which I could work independently on my projects. I really felt honored and enjoyed the independence and creative freedom this space allowed me. My projects were more creative, and I ultimately earned a scholarship to art school as a result of my work. My art teacher was very encouraging and allowed us to create our own curriculum. I think as a result of his faith in our talents, our school won various art awards and earned recognition as an innovative learning environment. Mr. R. was a really positive influence, and I still consider him a friend.
