PREJUDICE-ENFORCING EXPERIENCE

By my freshman year, I was adequately skilled in playing percussion instruments and therefore found myself helping others with music during Band period. Once the instructor stopped the entire band and asked me to switch instruments with another student because he wasn't "good enough." This made me uncomfortable, especially in front of friends, because I wanted to learn all the instruments in the rhythm section, not just the one I was good at. The teacher made a point to single me out in front of the class without respect to me or the other student. He also made it appear that the other student was no good. As a teacher, I would discuss matters of this type in private with the student after rehearsal or after class.
