When I was in 8th grade, at a junior high school in Chula Vista, I wanted to take an Auto Shop class. Unfortunately, the teacher told me that I was not allowed to take the class. He referred me to the counselor's office. The counselor informed me that I needed to take a Home Economics class instead, because I was a "girl", and the Auto Shop classes were only for "boys". I did as I was told, but I did not enjoy a single minute of sewing or cooking. I remember this situation clearly because I was angry that I could not take a class that I was interested in, because according to the rules, I was not the right "gender".

Both the teacher and counselor made me feel as though a "girl" could not learn to work on cars. They also made me feel a though I needed to in Home Economics, even though I had little interest in learning to sew or cook. They made me feel inferior to the "boys" who were allowed to take the Auto Shop.
