POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
Monica
BACKGROUND
Sex: female
Ethnicity: Mexican-American and Costa Rican
Born in:
Parents born in: Costa Rica(Mom) and U.S. (Dad)
Because my father was in the AirForce for 20 years, I did lots of traveling around the world. I've only lived in
California for 3 and a half years, considering I was born here. I grew up in Spain, did junior high in Texas, high
school in Germany and now, college in California. These experiences have made me probably more open-minded
and flexible to new situations than the majority of people in the US.
.....
When I was in 3rd grade, the whole school had to make a kite and enter in the school contest. They were all
judged by grade level, according to theme and creativity. Also, they had to actually fly. My kite had a rainbow
and a pit of gold. I was chosen as winner because of my creativity and my kite flew. I felt like I was on tope of
the world! My kite was displayed, I received a silver dollar and a certificate, and my picture was taken and put in the newspaper.
They recognized us and made a "big deal' out of something that might be considered minute. This brought up my self-esteem, and the
contest allowed me to express my creativity.
