Coming from a different background than many people, I was able to appreciate the many cultures that are included in our society. Just like I wanted my culture to be appreciated, I learned to appreciate and learn about others. These experiences gave me the opportunity to relate to people not only within my own culture, but from other cultures.

..... I went to elementary school in Mexico and at that time I was very involved in school and community activities. Those activities gave me the opportunity to feel appreciated, special, accepted, and important. During my school experiences in the US, I felt empowered with the fact that I was learning a new language and was beginning to feel appreciated by many people. One year after I moved to the US, I had a teacher who encouraged me in many different ways. I felt frustrated at times because I wasn't fluent in English. But this teacher helped me build my self-esteem and taught me many ways to succeed in school.
