BACKGROUND

Sex: Male
Ethnicity: Mexican-American
Born in: Tijuana: Mexico
Parents born in: Mexico

I went to school most of my lifetime in Mexico. It takes me twice as much time to say something in English. This is because my thinking processing is initially in the Spanish language.

When I was in 9th grade, I received a medal for being an outstanding ESL-6 student. My 4 years in high school, I was an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) student. I always felt special, important and accepted when I served as a peer-tutor for math. When I was in algebra, trigonometry and precalculus, the teachers allowed me to teach some of the math class. I felt empowered and responsible for the learning of my friends.
Mrs. E always made me feel special. She gave me all of her support when I needed it. She always gave me encouragement to do my best at all times. Mrs. E helped me realize all of the potential that I have. By rewarding me a medal, she deposited all of the trust and expectations in me. My AVID teachers were always giving me their support. It seems like if they know I would do what needed to be done because they allowed me to be a peer-tutor, I did not let them down. The teachers I had for math classes in high school were always supportive of my teaching. Every time I taught something, they would emphasize that it was a good way to remember the way I did it.
