Questions/Activities

1. Create a list describing the different types of insensitivity and/or thoughtlessness teachers displayed in the stories you read.

2. Think about the stories of Carlos, Juan, and Luliana as you read Why Bilingual Education?.  Regardless of your own personal opinion, construct a convincing argument FOR Bilingual Education AND and a convincing argument AGAINST Bilingual Education.  Each of these arguments should contain at least 3 points to support the position being argued.  Next, read Ideas for Working with Students Who Speak English as a Second Language . What strategies might teachers have used with Carlos, Juan, and Luliana to promote their learning and self-esteem?

3. In most of the Negative Stories, students feel that they were treated unfairly and/or insensitively. Read Ensuring Education Excellence . Then select several Negative Stories and discuss the components of educational equity that were ignored in each of your selected stories. How might the situations have been handled more fairly and sensitively?

4. Describe at least one thing you would/could do to help all students have a more positive experience in your class?
