<title>Faculty Meet with Dr. Jill Biden at a Roundtable on Building Capacity in Military Schools</title>

<description>Dr. Joey Nuñez Estrada Jr., Dr. Colette Ingraham, and Dr. Trish Hatch  met with Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to discuss the positive impact of the Building Capacity in Military-Connected Schools project. This partnership between eight military-connected school districts and the USC School of Social Work, is a four-year $7.5 million project funded by the Department of Defense Education Activity. Dr. Estrada, assistant professor in the School Counseling Program, brought this opportunity for specialized training and supervision for our CSP students to San Diego State University.</description>

<title>New York Times Quotes Dr. Frank Harris</title>

<description>Dr. Frank Harris, Assistant Professor of Postsecondary Educational Leadership and Student Affairs, was recently quoted in an article by the New York Times regarding equality in community college athletics. Since 2004, Dr. Harris has presented more than 30 research papers, symposia, and workshops at regional and national conferences for postsecondary educators.  Dr. Harris completed a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies at Loyola Marymount University and a Master of Arts in Speech Communication at California State University, Northridge. His Ed.D. in Higher Education is from the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education.</description>

<title>Award-winners: Dr. Douglas Fisher and Dr. Nancy Frey</title>

<description>There is no such thing as summer vacation for College of Education faculty members Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey!  Since the end of the spring semester Dr. Fisher and Dr. Frey have been awarded two awards for their research and writing. In early June Dr. Fisher and Dr. Frey won the Association of Educational Publisher’s “Innovation Award” for the publication Implementing RTI with English Learners by Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, and Carol Rothenburg.  This publication outlines methods and approaches that all teachers can use to ensure that English learners are successfully achieving in core curriculum areas.</description>

<description>The College of Education is pleased to announce that Dr. Scot Danforth has accepted the position of Director of the School of Teacher Education (STE) and will be joining the College in August. Dr. Danforth is a Professor in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. He is a well-known scholar in the field of disability studies in education. He serves as Co-Editor of Disability Studies Quarterly, the journal of the Society for Disability Studies.</description>

<title>Outstanding Awards: Dr. Patricia Lozada-Santone and SDSU SCTA</title>

<description>Congratulations to San Diego State University Student California Teacher Association (SCTA) and its advisor Dr. Patricia Lozada-Santone, recognized as SCTA's outstanding chapter and outstanding advisor for the 2010-2011 academic year! As the SDSU College of Education Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Lozada-Santone has many responsibilities and duties, and one of her favorite responsibilities is what she calls “working the late shift", which involves advising weekly meetings for the student organizations that often begin around 6:00 PM and last for several hours. This commitment is what the students love and appreciate about Dr. Lozada-Santone and it is no wonder that she was nominated and won the title of Outstanding SCTA Advisor for the 2010-2011 academic year.</description>

<title>COE Awarded $4.8 Million</title>

<description>The College of Education at SDSU is proud to announce it will be the recipient of four grants that will provide direct support for SDSU students who pursue careers in Special Education and Counseling and School Psychology. The nation-wide competition offered five different ‘focus competitions’ for submission. SDSU, the only university in the nation to receive four grants, applied for and won the grants in three of the focus areas.</description>
