What is the Bilingual Credential?
The Bilingual Credential is the Bilingual Cross-Cultural Language Academic Development (Spanish) teaching credential for Multiple and Single Subject Bilingual students interested in teaching in a bilingual elementary or secondary school classroom.
What is the difference between the Multiple and Single Subject teaching Credentials?
The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential authorizes teaching in the elementary school level (K-6). The Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes teaching in the secondary schools (6-12) the specific subject(s) granted via CSET or coursework.
What is the minimum GPA for acceptance?
A 2.67 overall GPA or a 2.75 in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units of coursework is needed for both Multiple and Single Subject Bilingual Programs. Students who do not meet the required GPA admission criteria may submit a Petition for Special Consideration with their departmental application.
Where can I get information on the admission requirements and prerequisites for the Bilingual Teaching Credential Program?
Under "Prospective Students" you will find the Bilingual Credential page containing information regarding the Multiple and Single Subject requirements. You can also find the admission requirements and course description in the General Catalog and Graduate Bulletin. You may obtain a copy of the Bulletin of the Graduate Division from SDSU Aztec Shops Bookstore 619-594-7535 or view this publication on line at http://coursecat.sdsu.edu/bulletin/. In addition, you may call to schedule an appointment with our advisor by calling 619-594-5155.
How do I apply for admission?
There are two applications required.
1. Apply to the CSU Graduate Division (SDSU) online.
- Go to: www.csumentor.edu
- Select/Click "Apply Online" from the button at the top of the page
- Select/Click on "Graduate Admission Application"
- Select the term your applying: Fall 2012
- Read the information - if first time CSU Mentor applicant, click on create an account button otherwise logon if a returning applicant
- CSU campus applying: select "San Diego State University Graduate"
- Select: "Start New Application"
- Read: Message from the campus
- Select/Click: Begin Application for San Diego State University Graduate
- Applying for: select Fall 2012
- Under Main campus/Off campus center: select: "San Diego State Campus"
- Major/Program objective: Select "Credential Only"
- Degree objective: Select "Other," then type in "Credential" in the space provided and click on the OK button
- Education credential objective. Teacher, specialist or other service credential program: Select "planning to apply to credential program this term"
- Credential Objective name: select appropriate program:
a. Teaching: Bilingual Multiple Subject Instruction
b. Teaching: Bilingual Single Subject Instruction - Answer NO to the question "have you been admitted to the program for the credential you’re now seeking?"
- You have now completed the first part "Enrollment Information" of the CSU application, see menu on the left-hand side and complete all sections.
- To continue, click on button "next" located at the bottom of the page and complete sections 2 – 12 then submit your application.
2. Apply to the Policy Studies Department, visit Bilingual Credential Program page.
When do we apply to CSU Graduate Division?
The deadline for the Fall semester is May 1; deadline for Spring semester is November 1.

When do we apply to the Bilingual Credential Program?
The target deadline for Fall semester is February 1; there are no Spring Term admissions.
How long is the teaching credential Program?
Our full time program can be completed in two semester. You may complete the program on a part-time basis. Our advisor will work with the student to design the best program on a part-time basis.
When will I find out if I was accepted to the Program?
Once you have submitted a complete application, you will be called to participate in an entrance interview. You must have taken the Spanish Language & Cultural Awareness Proficiency exam to qualify for an entrance interview. Final acceptances will be issued early May for fall applicants.
How do I meet the Language Proficiency and Cultural Competency Requirement?
Submit a copy of a passing grade for PLC 415 or your passing scores on California Subject Examinations for Teachers, Languages Other Than English (CSET-LOTE) Tests III and V for Spanish (consult CSET website for requirements for other languages).
