Bilingual Credential Single Subject or Multiple Subject Programs
The Department of Policy Studies in Language and Cross Cultural Education prepares bilingual and cross-cultural teachers, administrators, and other educators who are reflective and transformational practitioners in addressing the needs of ethnically and linguistically diverse learners through collaboration with schools, families and community. We work closely with schools and districts to support the needs of English learners in K–12 classrooms and the professional development of biliteracy teachers.
The Bilingual Credential is available to students interested in teaching in a bilingual elementary school classroom. The credential authorizes the holder to teach in any self-contained bilingual or regular classroom in which one teacher is responsible for all the subjects commonly taught. In addition, it authorizes the teacher to provide instruction in the primary language. Also, the Bilingual Credential credential authorizes teachers to teach in designated English Language Development (ELD) classrooms, and to provide specially designated content instruction in English.
The Single Subject Bilingual Credential (Secondary Grades 6-12) is available for students interested in teaching in a bilingual Spanish middle or secondary school classroom in the candidates’ subject major (e.g., Science, Math, Social Science, English, Spanish, etc). This credential authorizes the holder to teach in any self-contained Spanish bilingual or regular classroom in which one teacher is responsible for teaching the given subject area. Because courses on methods of teaching subject areas are taught in Spanish as well as English, candidates must meet language of emphasis proficiency requirements. You can complete your professional coursework and student teaching in two semesters and approximately 50% of the total program is devoted to student teaching. The Multiple Subject Bilingual Credential (Elementary K–6 Education) is available to students interested in teaching in a bilingual Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin or Filpino credential elementary school classroom. This credential authorizes the holder to teach in any self-contained bilingual or regular classroom in which one teacher is responsible for all the subjects commonly taught in the elementary schools. Because courses on methods of teaching subject areas are taught in Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin or Filpino as well as English, candidates must meet the respective language of emphasis proficiency requirements. You can complete your professional coursework and student teaching in two semesters and approximately 50% of the total program is devoted to student teaching. Bilingual & Special Education Dual Credential - Acquisition of Language and Academic Skills (ALAS)
This dual credential teacher preparation program is designed for Bilingual individuals proficient in Spanish and English seeking a Bilingual credential and who are interested in obtaining an additional credential as an Education Specialist in Mild / Moderate disabilities. This is an intensive two-year credential program for highly committed individuals interested in meeting the specific needs of English language learners in California. Application Deadlines
The CSU MENTOR deadline to apply to SDSU for Fall 2013 is March 1, 2013.
The Fall 2013 deadline to apply to the PLC department for the Bilingual Multiple Subject or Bilingual Single Subject Credential program is March 15, 2013.
How to Apply
Applying to SDSU is a two step process:
Step 1: Apply to the University as a graduate student
You are required to submit the CSU application form to the SDSU office of Graduate Admissions. Go to the CSU Mentor online application and submit both application and $55 fee online.
If you are applying to the Single Subject, please use Bilingual Credential, code 100. If you are applying to the Multiple Subject, please enter Bilingual Credential, code 200.
SDSU Graduates: If you attended any other colleges, since your last attendance to SDSU, submit to Graduate Admissions ONE OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT from each institution attended. Submit transcripts to:

Step 2: Apply to the Policy Studies Department, Bilingual Credential Program
