On June 2, 1998 Proposition 227 passed by a vote of 61% in favor to 39% opposed. A petition for an injunction by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) and other civil rights groups was filed the following day. On July 15, 1998 the federal district court in San Francisco denied the injunction. Proposition 227 became the law in California governing the education of language minority students on August 3, 1998.
