California Commission for Teacher Credentialing
CLAD Course Requirements

Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (B/CLAD) teachers must demonstrate competence by course work or testing in all six of the areas of teaching English language learners in specially designed programs. Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) teachers must demonstrate competence in areas 1, 2, and 3.

1) Language structure and first- and second-language development

2) Methodology of bilingual, English language development and content instruction

3) Culture and cultural diversity

BCLAD Teachers must also complete coursework in the following:

4) Methodology for primary-language instruction

5) The culture of emphasis

6) The language of emphasis
