As a faculty member in the MFT Program at SDSU, my passion is to train culturally responsive and globally informed MFT practitioners to serve the unique needs of diverse communities, both locally and internationally. I bridge classroom teaching with the students’ direct engagement with the community. I believe that these classroom-community intersections provide the ideal mentoring space for me, as a teacher-mentor, to help students identify their own passion and vision for work that is transformative. I also emphasize the self-of-the-therapist and the integration of the personal and professional in MFT training.
I value the simple yet profound wisdom in these words, which speak of meaningful learning:
I think you should learn, of course, and some days you must learn a great deal. But you should also have days when you allow what is already in you to swell up inside of you until it touches everything. And you can feel it inside you. If you never take time out to let that happen, then you just accumulate facts, and they begin to rattle around inside of you. You can make noise with them, but never really feel anything with them. It's hollow.
