San Diego State University President's Diversity Scholarship Award Recipients from the Sweetwater Union High School District

Carlos Navarro II is a senior at Castle Park High School and maintains a 3.88 grade point average. He plans to study civil engineering. Carlos will be the first in his family to attend college. He is a member of both the varsity cross country and the track and field teams. Carlos helps out at the Family Beacon Center on the campus of Vista Square Elementary School by cleaning up litter and graffiti, and he has stripped and waxed floors in the school.  He volunteers on various neighborhood projects throughout the year.  Carlos plans to become actively involved with his community once he graduates from SDSU.

George Ching attends Eastlake High School and maintains a 3.94 grade point average. George reflects the diversity of his school’s student body – he is Chinese and Japanese-Mexican; he speaks English and Spanish fluently; and he is currently studying Japanese.  He believes that majoring in economics can help him become an involved citizen of his community.  George has been enrolled in Compact for Success since middle school and has been a member of the California Scholarship Federation since his freshman year. He has volunteered at the Frederica Manor Care Center and his church choir. In his spare time, he plays the violin in the district orchestra.

Eduardo Santacruz is a senior at Hilltop High School and maintains a 4.05.  grade point average. Eduardo is interested in becoming a journalist.  His love of reading and writing determined his destiny.  He believes that writing provides a voice to the voiceless in our global community of humanity.  He is interested in confronting issues that impact society while advocating for human rights for Latinos and minorities.  He is also interested in raising the awareness of people and motivating them to take action.  He is a member of MEChA and the Spanish Club.  In the Spanish Club, he participates in fundraising for worthy causes.

Yessenia Perez attends Southwest High School and maintains a 3.6 grade point average. She plans to major in criminal justice. Yessenia is the eldest in her family and the first to graduate from high school. Growing up in Los Angeles, she witnessed first-hand the impact of violence on young lives, the community, and her family.  Her motivation to succeed is to become a role model and mentor to her younger brother and youth. She joined Link Crew (a club that helps freshmen transition into high school), is an SDSU Upward Bound participant, and volunteers for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.  Yessenia would like to help those teenagers at risk of following the wrong path.

Iman Autman is from Castle Park High School and maintains a 3.04 grade point average.  Iman participates in AVID, (Advancement Via Individual Determination) as the club’s secretary; is a member of the African Student Union; and was thrust into the role of softball pitcher when the former pitcher suddenly left the team.  Her community service includes providing coaching assistance for the Las Palmas Softball League and volunteering at QUALCOMM Stadium events.  Her mother is her personal mentor and motivation.  She hopes to honor her mother by becoming a registered nurse.  Iman is dedicated to making a difference in the world and would one day like to travel to different countries to aid the sick.
