offers bachelor’s degrees in 81 areas, master’s degrees
in 72 and doctorates in 16. SDSU’s nearly 33,000

Sweetwater district schools serve
approximately 39,000 students in grades 7-12 and 29,981
adult learners in the south San Diego county communities
of Bonita, Chula Vista, Eastlake, Imperial Beach,
National City, Otay
Mesa, South San Diego and San Ysidro. It is the largest
secondary (grades 7-12) school system in California.
Founded in 1920, the district has grown to encompass ten
middle schools, one junior high, twelve senior high
schools, one continuation high school, four adult
schools, and an alternative program for grades 7-12. To
help keep pace with unprecedented growth, Sweetwater
opened Otay Ranch High and Eastlake Middle School in
July 2003, and plans for three new schools-a high school
and two middle schools in the next decade-are on the
drawing board.
Sweetwater prides itself on the cultural, linguistic and
economic diversity of its students. Eighty-four percent
of students come from ethnically diversity backgrounds.
One of every two students speaks a language other than
English at home and about 27% are limited-English
proficient.

The
Sweetwater Education Foundation
is an independent, nonprofit organization of concerned
community parents and leaders dedicated to providing
financial help to students in the Compact for Success
program. Working in partnership with Sweetwater Union
High School District and San Diego State University, the
Sweetwater Education Foundation is making an
extraordinary promise - to raise $10 million in the next
five years to ensure that no financial barrier will
stand between a Compact student and the right to a
college education.
"We need to
keep the promise of financial support. Our students are
depending on every member of the community to help turn
their dreams of a college education into a reality."

Valerio, Executive Director
