Compact College Advisors

The Compact College Advisor program provides a crucial piece to the communication puzzle by providing middle school students access to a current SDSU student that is highly knowledgeable of the Compact for Success’ expectations as well as what it takes to succeed at San Diego State University.

The Compact College Advisor (CCA) program was implemented during the 2002-03 school year by the collaborative efforts of several SDSU and Sweetwater offices.  Sweetwater students and parents are officially welcomed to the Compact for Success during the seventh grade year.  Parents are notified of their seventh and eighth grader’s progress in the Compact for Success with every six week progress report and seventh graders are encouraged by school personnel to attend the 7th Grade Campus Visit to SDSU.  Each middle school hosts an annual College: Making It Happen night for parents and students.  In addition, standardized posters with A-G requirements and Compact for Success benchmarks are posted in every classroom at Sweetwater middle schools and high schools.

Role of the Compact College Advisor

Compact College Advisors (CCA’s) serve as peer advisors to keep students motivated, informed, and on track.  Students are issued passes to meet with the CCA during the school day-- either individually or in small groups.  CCA’s check in daily with a counselor or administrator that has been designated by the school site to serve as the CCA’s site contact.  The Sweetwater Compact for Success office sends the site contact an updated list of students that are either “On-Track” or “Off-Track” based on the G.P.A. on their six week progress report.  The site contact in turn provides the list to the CCA, who begins calling students from the off-track list to encourage them to raise their G.P.A. and be a part of the Compact or congratulating students from the on-track list for their performance.  Through their one-on-one contact with students, CCA’s are often key in referring students to tutoring programs and other after-school academic support activities

Whether meeting with their Compact College Advisor individually or in a small group, each student receives extra attention to help motivate them to stay focused on their new goal: an attainable, affordable and successful future as a San Diego State University student.
