7th Grade Campus
Visit
Each year,
7th grade students and their parents are welcomed to the Compact
for Success partnership by their school site. In addition, San
Diego State University hosts roughly 3,600 students and parents
from each 7th grade class to formally welcome them to the
Compact and introduce these SDSU hopefuls to the campus and its
services.
Schedule of
Events
Students and
parents are bused from their school to the entrance of Cox
Arena, where they are greeted and escorted to their school’s
section by SDSU students. The day is comprised of
four
activities: a welcome ceremony, a brief walking tour of the
campus, workshop sessions and an informational fair.
Welcome Ceremony
The ceremony
in Cox Arena has
featured
student mariachi groups from the Sweetwater
district. SDSU's
president and Sweetwater's superintendent officially welcome
families into the Compact for Success.
Workshop Sessions
Students and Parents will be given the opportunity to attend
workshops regarding financial assistance, student life, and what
parents can do in order to secure their child's success.
Informational
Fair
Students and
parents visit tables staffed by professors, staff and students
from academic departments and members of various student
organizations.
Campus Tour
Visitors are
led on a walking tour of the campus with an SDSU student and are
led through various stations highlighting important locations on
campus.
Who can
participate?
All
Sweetwater 7th grade students and a parent or guardian are
invited to attend. The event is open to the first 150 7th grade
students at each school site that turn in permission slips.
Each student is required to bring one parent or guardian with
them. Parents receive valuable information about their child’s
future and are welcomed as active participants in the Compact
for Success.
School
Involvement
All
Sweetwater middle schools promote
the
event early in the year to insure early sign-ups. Sweetwater
provides incentives to students who sign up early, including
SDSU logo items and electronics. Each school’s principal
attends and provides supervisory staff to accompany the visitors
on the buses.
Collaboration
The Annual
Campus Visit to SDSU is the product of the efforts of many
departments at SDSU and Sweetwater. The Compact for Success
Office at SDSU relies on the support of its colleagues in the
Division of Undergraduate Studies, EOP, Associated Students,
Athletics, Public Safety and Aztec Shops, as well as on the
outreach efforts of the many colleges and student organizations
that provide their time and resources to provide these new
members of the SDSU community with a fun and informative day at
SDSU. Sweetwater’s Departments of Transportation,
Food Services and Grants and Communications also work to make the day run
successfully.
All visiting
7th grade students leave SDSU with a comprehensive packet of
information from College: Making It Happen, EOP, Financial Aid
and CSU Mentor as well as an agenda for their visit to SDSU.
Visitors also make valuable connections to academic departments
that may one day be their choice of a major. Individual schools
usually hold a raffle of SDSU logo items for students and
parents on the return bus ride.
